The 4 Shifts That Helped Me Lead Differently

I think most of us start a business because we want something better — more freedom, more impact, maybe a little more joy in the process.
But somewhere along the way, if we’re not careful, we end up carrying everything.
The projects. The problems. The people.
And instead of building something bigger than us, we build something that depends completely on us.
Over the last few years, I’ve been learning how to lead differently.
It’s not perfect, and I’m still working on it, but I wanted to share 4 leadership shifts that are helping me move from ownership to oversight.
You don't have to do it all.
You probably could, especially in the beginning, but that doesn’t mean you should. Great leaders build teams that do more than they ever could alone.
Trust is a choice.
The team won’t always do things your way, but if you’ve got the right people, they’ll get to the right outcome.
Share the weight.
The business is going to grow, and so is the responsibility. Distribute the load so you’re not crushed by it.
Let the process evolve.
I wanted to give up control overnight, but it’s not always that easy. Leadership is a daily practice of releasing a little more and trusting a little deeper.
I dive deeper into these shifts (and how I’m still learning them) in my latest video.
If you’ve been feeling the weight of leadership lately, I hope it gives you something to work with.
